The Scriptures 1.0.4

September 21st, 2008

I just finished submitting version 1.0.4 of The Scriptures for the iPhone/iPod Touch for review. I’ll post an update when it is approved. For more information on what’s new in this version, see the changelog.

I am looking at getting an iPod touch within the next couple months and had been thinking about working on a scripture app like yours. I currently work in a Spanish Branch and do a lot of translating at meetings so I have been wanting to make a way to have a program, identical to yours but with a spanish button at the top that could do a quick switch between the languages, so that if your reading Moroni 10, 3 then you could click one button and instantly be viewing that same verse in spanish. I am not necessarily asking you to do this, unless you want to. But am more interested in doing it myself, since I love to program anyways. I would actually almost prefer to do it myself just for a learning experience. Getting to the point, I wanted to know (since you do not charge for the app) if you had considered letting the code be open source, or if not open to public if I could either see what you did and possibly build onto it. If not, which I can understand any reservations, then my questions would be more general such as what recommendations do you have to start a program like this, if you did any tutorials and so forth. Any help you have would be appreciated. I am a good php mysql programmer with experience in C, and Java, (assembly as well, but can see that helping). Thanks for any help you might offer. Sorry my comment was longer than the post :)

I am happy to have this on my iPhone and use it frequently. Previous to iPhone I had a Palm Pilot and Pocket PC where I used “Mark My Scriptures”. The advantage of that software was the ability to get from one book to another (down to the verse level) with a minimum number of “clicks” (strokes). I never much used or cared for the actual “marking” feature, but the navigation was superior to any other solution I’ve seen — and I go back to the original Palm version over 10 years ago offered by the Church with Reader.

Anything you can to do to make the “scripture chase” more efficient will be appreciated. But if it never gets better than it is today, I am happy to have it and will continue to find it useful.

I was sitting in the Denver airport (I’m from Texas) the other day reading Lsn 35 of the current BoM lessons. I wouldn’t carry the morrocan leather version on a business trip so it is great to always have the scriptures with me for times like that. Thanks for your work on this.

Love this program. Thanks for your efforts. Ever thought about adding the Hymns to it? every so often i find myself thinking how great it would be if i had the hymns at such a convenience as these scriptures. thanks.
