Lee on top of Dragon's Tooth Mountain

So who is this Lee Falin person and why should you care what he has to say about science?

I worked for many years as a software developer in the telecommunications and defense industries before falling in love with writing and education. This love of education eventually led me to go back to school and earn a B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Illinois before going on to obtain a PhD in Genetics, Bioinformatics, and Computational Biology from Virginia Tech. My PhD dissertation was on The Quantification of System Uncertainty and Gene Function Prediction. If that title didn’t make your eyes glaze over, you can read more about my other research here.

I currently live in Virginia with my amazing wife, five crazy kids, eight sullen chickens, and several thousand honeybees. I’m a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and I served a two-year volunteer mission in Brazil where I learned to speak Portuguese and to never buy hamburgers from street vendors.

I’ve had the opportunity to teach science at just about every age group, from elementary to college freshman. These days, aside from teaching science to my own five children, I also mentor several high school science courses at our local homeschool cooperative.

Everyday Einstein

I’m a long time fan of science fiction and fantasy, and hope one day to be the first fantasy author to live on Mars. I’ve written several short stories in a series called “Science Fictioned” which takes ideas from peer-reviewed, scientific journals and uses them in science fiction and fantasy stories for middle grade and YA readers.

When I’m not teaching science, I work as a software developer at Rogue Amoeba and contribute to various other software projects.

In addition to being a mild-mannered software developer and science teacher by day, I also host a fun, weekly podcast on the Quick and Dirty Tips network called Everyday Einstein – Quick and Dirty Tips for Making Sense of Science. If you like the articles I post on this site, you like the podcast even more.
